In addition, an overview of the situation of nuclear power generation around the world and in our country and a discussion of the response of the nuclear industry in each country to the policies for fighting climate change are provided.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The lightning-fast, worldwide distribution in 2021 of <b>vaccines<\/b> against the SARS-CoV2 coronavirus triggered an economic recovery that led to peak demand in the consumption of raw materials. This caused offering prices to rise, which in turn ended up creating an inflation situation.<b> <\/b>This state of affairs was compounded by the Russian invasion of Ukraine at the end of February 2022, which led to much geopolitical jostling and set off an energy crisis in Europe, which in turn injected great uncertainty into the global economy. Among other measures, the <b>European Commission<\/b> presented in May 2022 the <b><i>REPowerEU Plan<\/i><\/b> for putting an end to <b>the EU\u2019s dependence<\/b> on Russian fossil fuels \u2014by investing almost \u20ac100kM per year\u2014 and tackling the <b>climate crisis<\/b> as well. <span class=\"s1\">Moreover<\/span>, the <b>European Parliament and Commission<\/b> both declared that <b>nuclear power is a necessary source of generation<\/b> during the energy transition period and added it to the mechanisms in the EU\u2019s <b>taxonomy,<\/b> which will come into force on January 1<span class=\"s2\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/span>, 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><b>Global primary energy consumption<\/b> amounted to 595.15 EJ, with a 5.8% <b>growth,<\/b> led by renewables (15%) and followed by fossil fuels (5.6%) and nuclear (3.8%). <b>Five countries<\/b> were behind more than half of the world\u2019s energy demand: China (26.5%), the U.S. (15.6%), India (6.0%), Russia (5.3%) and Japan (3.0%). EU-27 countries accounted for 10,1% of said demand (Spain: 0.9%). Fossil fuels \u2014consumption of which is slowly waning\u2014 represented 82.3% of world energy consumption, led by oil, which had a 31% share of the total.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Global <b>CO<\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b><sub>2<\/sub><\/b><\/span> <b>emissions<\/b> surged and reached pre-Covid levels, up to 33,884 Mt, and grew 5.9% (5.4% in the EU-27). The aforementioned five biggest energy consumers were responsible for 60+% of emissions. In <b>Spain,<\/b> the fleet of nuclear power stations was behind 30% of clean energy emissions and prevent more than 20 Mt of CO<span class=\"s2\"><sub>2<\/sub><\/span> from being released every year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There were 444 reactors in operation throughout the year. As of <b>December 31<\/b><span class=\"s2\"><b><sup>st<\/sup><\/b><\/span><b>, there were 437 reactors in operation in 32 countries<\/b> and 2,653 TWh had been produced, which amounted to <b>4.3% of the global primary energy consumption and 10.3% of the electricity consumption<\/b> (28,466.3 TWh; 25% in the EU-27). Thus, 2,000+ Mt of CO<span class=\"s2\"><sub>2<\/sub><\/span> were kept from being released into the atmosphere, that is, more than 6% of all energy-related emissions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to PRIS-OIEA data, as of <b>October 2022<\/b> there are 56 reactors under construction in 18 countries, which amount to 57,664 MW of net power. China (with 18 reactors), India (8), Russia (4), Turkey (4) and South Korea (3) stand out among these countries. There are plans to build 96 new reactors (98,597 MW) in 16 countries \u2014most in China, India and Russia\u2014 and studies for another 330 reactors (361 GW) are underway in 31 countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The policy of the governments of <b>18 countries<\/b> with different regulatory frameworks regarding the extension of the operating life of their plants is worth noting <b>(190 reactors have already been authorized to operate beyond 40 years).<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In <b>2021, Spain<\/b>\u2019s GDP rose by 5.5%, primary energy consumption by 5.7% and electricity consumption by 3.5%, up to 259,849 net GWh. Spanish nuclear power plants outputted 54,040 net GWh (20.8% of all energy produced in the country). Nuclear was the only technology that produced more than 20% of all energy consumed in Spain in the last decade year on year and its <b>performance indicators<\/b> stood at around 90 percent. Six reactors had scheduled refueling and maintenance outages, thereby solving the situation they were put in as a result of the pandemic. The Ministry for Ecological Transition granted the <b>renewal of the operating licenses<\/b> of Cofrentes N.P.P. and of both units of Asc\u00f3 N.P.P.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In March 2021, the Spanish Government approved the <b>2021-2030 Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC),<\/b> which defines a target scenario with a calendar of the maintenance that will take place at all Spanish plants until 2027 and a 50% reduction of the installed capacity by 2030. The three remaining stations after 2030 will be phased out of operation until 2035, according to the March 2019 agreement sponsored by the abovementioned ministry between the Spanish Radioactive Waste Management Organization (ENRESA) and the different energy companies that own the Spanish nuclear power plants.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>his article carries on the tradition that started more than a decade ago and presents the results of energy consumption in the world and Spain in 2021, as well as the data of and forecasts for the fleet of Spanish nuclear power plants \u2014updated as of October 2022.
