What drove you to get to your current position?
You could say I have been working here my entire professional life. I first came to Cofrentes in 1982 when I was just 22 years old, almost by chance and due to its proximity to my hometown Requena, just 40 kilometers away from the plant. At that time, as plant construction was approaching completion, it was easy to work here doing a large variety of administrative and documentary jobs, making more money than anywhere else. What I could not imagine then was that from that moment on my life would be forever linked to Cofrentes nuclear power plant. First I worked in Hidroeléctrica and in other service companies until 1986, when Iberdrola gave me the opportunity to join their staff to fill a vacancy in the Information Center, and here I am, a few months away from retirement, extremely proud to have been part of this company and to have seen the construction, commissioning and 40-year operation of this magnificent facility called Cofrentes,

I suppose many colleagues have similar professional careers and have been in the industry for many years, but in my case, I am also happy to say I carry this business in my heart. I feel privileged to be part of a very peculiar world, where I can categorically say that at all levels there are outstanding professionals highly committed to this energy and with a way of working that is methodical, sensible and 100% responsible, always putting safety before anything else.

The most interesting part of your job… any milestone you would like to highlight?

My early days at the Information Center were very special. Providing people with information on how nuclear power plants work, especially given all the social prejudice towards this type of facilities, is not an easy task. I reckon at the Information Center I must have spoken to some 200,000 people, which is the same as saying 200,000 different opinions. That made the job quite demanding in terms of preparation, reasoning, technical knowledge, persuasion, objectivity, empathy and a few other qualities, all with the aim of giving the public a clear idea of nuclear energy and its importance for power supply. At this point in my life I can say without fear of being wrong that society has little knowledge of how nuclear power plants work, that they receive biased information and that they see us as a danger, to which I always reply that we nuclear professionals are people very committed to what we do and that it would be great if many other industrial activities not perceived by society as risky, were as regulated as ours.

There are many remarkable milestones, but what I always stress out is that nuclear power plants are very well managed and employ qualified personnel capable of responding to any situation. I do not admit, in fact I am outraged, whenever someone may suggest we are irresponsible.

The most rewarding thing about your day to day at work….

I know it’s not very original to say this, but the most gratifying thing about coming to work every day is seeing from the bus the cooling towers “steaming”, or as some people call the plant, “the cloud factory”. I think a feeling common and a source of pride to all of us Cofrentes professionals is to have kept the plant running safely every day over the last 40 years and for as many more as we can.

What brought you to the nuclear industry and how did people around you react to your decision? and now?

I think that as in all regions where nuclear power plants were built, neighbors see them as a source of employment. Our operating experience, including our own and that of other power plants, amounts to over 260 years in the case of the Spanish fleet, and to more than 15,000 years for all reactors worldwide. Nuclear power plants are becoming safer, more robust and more reliable with time.
