En Erlangen comenz\u00f3 a estudiar matem\u00e1ticas y f\u00edsica en 1902. Hasta ese momento, se utilizaba la observaci\u00f3n directa usando rad\u00f3n-222 como fuente de part\u00edculas que se dirig\u00edan a trav\u00e9s de un tubo de vac\u00edo hacia una l\u00e1mina que causaba su dispersi\u00f3n, observable forma de destellos. <\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">Era un m\u00e9todo fatigoso para los ojos. El propio Rutherford escribi\u00f3 en 1908: \u00abGeiger es un diablo en la tarea de contar destellos, y podr\u00eda estar haci\u00e9ndolo una noche entera sin que eso afectara a su precisi\u00f3n. Tras producir un intenso campo el\u00e9ctrico entre el \u00e1nodo y el c\u00e1todo, las part\u00edculas alfa entraban en el tubo a trav\u00e9s de una peque\u00f1a ventana de mica.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">Las part\u00edculas alfa colisionaban con el gas, produciendo iones que colisionaban con otras mol\u00e9culas produciendo m\u00e1s iones. Cada cascada de iones producida por una part\u00edcula alfa descargaba parcialmente el cilindro, produciendo un pulso de voltaje que permit\u00eda su medici\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">En 1912 el resultado de su experimento apareci\u00f3 publicado por primera vez en un art\u00edculo de la Academia de Ciencias de Viena; ese mismo a\u00f1o, Geiger dejar\u00eda Manchester para aceptar un puesto en el Instituto F\u00edsico-T\u00e9cnico Alem\u00e1n, en Berl\u00edn.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">Al estallar la I Guerra Mundial en 1914, Geiger dej\u00f3 los laboratorios para alistarse en el ej\u00e9rcito como oficial de artiller\u00eda. Durante varios a\u00f1os en las trincheras, el fr\u00edo y la humedad se cebaron con su salud, caus\u00e1ndole un reumatismo cr\u00f3nico que acabar\u00eda acort\u00e1ndole la vida.<br \/>\n<\/span><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"b-loaded alignnone\" style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/E2EjAs9WUAMBB3h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"363\" \/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"b-loaded alignnone\" style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/E2EjAs9WUAMBB3h.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"645\" height=\"363\" \/><\/noscript><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\"><\/p>\n<p>De vuelta de la guerra, Hans Geiger puso en marcha el laboratorio de radiactividad de Berl\u00edn, acept\u00f3 la oferta de director de F\u00edsicas Experimentales en la Universidad de Kiel, atra\u00eddo por la independencia que del cargo y por ser su puerta de entrada en el mundo de la docencia. <\/p>\n<p><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">El nuevo medidor de radiactividad creado por Hans Geiger (a) en 1928 fue conocido como contador Geiger-M\u00fcller, por la colaboraci\u00f3n con Walther M\u00fcller (b), el primer estudiante de doctorado de Geiger. Era m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o que el modelo anterior y capaz de detectar alfa, beta y gamma.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><a style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\" href=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/E2EjBXNXMAQVa5Q.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" b-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/E2EjBXNXMAQVa5Q.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" b-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/pbs.twimg.com\/media\/E2EjBXNXMAQVa5Q.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1.1875rem; letter-spacing: -0.003em;\">El contador Geiger-M\u00fcller consist\u00eda en un cilindro de metal lleno de gas a baja presi\u00f3n (arg\u00f3n o helio) con una ventana de pl\u00e1stico o cer\u00e1mica en un extremo.
