The reasons for this review included the volume optimization as an option in the conditioning process for packages resulting from reconditioning processes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to provide a solution to the 23 packages indicated above, it was proposed that they could be reconditioned into prismatic metal containers (CMT), optimized in volume by adding powdery residues from the melting process of the metal waste of Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a Nuclear Power Plant carried out at the Cyclife facilities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acceptance process of the reconditioned packages optimized in volume with different types of waste was carried out in accordance with the methodology \u201cMetodolog\u00eda de aceptaci\u00f3n de bultos de RBMA\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process can be divided into the following stages:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discovery of packages in the facilities of the Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a Nuclear Power Plant that, due to their condition, need to be reconditioned in larger packaging.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edition of a \u201cDocumento Descriptivo de Bulto\u201d by the Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a Nuclear Power Plant, which describes the methodology of production of the packages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Means Control to the process of generation of a prototype package, carried out with the aim of verifying \u201cin situ\u201d the means that the producer has available for the conditioning of waste. The Means Control is carried out prior to the approval of the \u201cDocumento Descriptivo de Bulto\u201d by ENRESA, so the result of this must be satisfactory.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approval of the \u201cDocumento Descriptivo de Bulto\u201d and edition of the \u201cLibro de Proceso\u201d by ENRESA. This step is carried out jointly and involves the acceptance of the packages for transport and storage at the waste repository of El Cabril.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process is analogous to the rest of LILW package acceptance processes, paying special attention to the assignment of activity to the final package, which was carried out and verified according to the following premises:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Easily measured <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u03b3<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> isotopes: the sum of the activity of the wastes included in the package was considered, in accordance with the Technical Specification \u201cEspecificaci\u00f3n T\u00e9cnica para la evaluaci\u00f3n, aceptaci\u00f3n y seguimiento de las metodolog\u00edas aplicables en la determinaci\u00f3n de la actividad de los bultos RBMA\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rest of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u03b2<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u03b3<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isotopes and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u03b1 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isotopes: was done individually for each nature, depending on the amount of waste introduced in the final package.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main conclusions that were obtained after the completion of the process were the next:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A. <\/strong>Packages whose reprocessing was not viable for operational reasons (packages already immobilized, dose rate, etc.), were managed.<br \/>\n<strong>B.<\/strong> The use of a walled package, with hydraulic binder, made possible the management of the powdery secondary waste from the melting of the metal waste of the Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a Nuclear Power Plant as a volume optimization, reducing the final generation of packages by 29% in terms of stored volume.<br \/>\n<strong>C.<\/strong> The viability of assigning activity to a package with different natures was verified.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>D.<\/strong> It is necessary to adapt the waste management systems to automate the data loading of the packages generated as a result of volume optimization, with special emphasis on the data related to activity allocation.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>uring 2022, and after inspecting the inventory of the radioactive waste that still remained in its facilities pending of removal by ENRESA, the Santa Mar\u00eda de Garo\u00f1a Nuclear Power Plant (owned by Nuclenor) detected that there were 23 packages that presented degradations and integrity problems and, therefore, they were not suitable for transport and storage at the waste repository of El Cabril.
