I studied Industrial Technologies Engineering at the University of M\u00e1laga (UMA), where I initially thought I would end up focusing on robotics or automation, but reality turned out quite differently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The experience I had, along with the support of two key professors, Juan Mu\u00f1oz from Power Plants and Ignacio Loscertales from Fluid Mechanics, confirmed that what I truly enjoyed was thermal engineering and, above all, energy. After a year of Erasmus at the Wroc\u0142aw University of Science and Technology in Poland, I graduated with the best academic record in my cohort and went on to pursue the qualifying Master\u2019s in Industrial Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), where I continued specializing in this field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this period, I completed a one-year internship at CERN and also took part in an exchange program at the French National Institute for Nuclear Science and Technology (INSTN) in Cadarache, where I completed coursework equivalent to a Master\u2019s in Nuclear Engineering. This is where I fully stepped into this fascinating field. Eventually, I also completed a Master\u2019s in Astrophysics and Cosmology, finally satisfying a long-standing curiosity of mine, and I genuinely enjoyed every moment of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I enjoy most is studying, and I have always felt that the development and use of nuclear fission, and of course fusion as well, which represents a field where I can continue learning and researching indefinitely, satisfying that curiosity. My main contributions were in CAD design, which I still enjoy a lot today, and thermo-mechanical finite element simulations of key components developed by my team. This exposed me to extreme operating conditions that I later found to be common in nuclear fusion: vacuum environments, cryogenics, strong magnetic fields, and radiation. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, my Master\u2019s thesis in nuclear engineering focused on a RAMI analysis of vacuum detection systems for the ITER reactor. This is where my journey into fusion began.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Transition to the professional field<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The COVID crisis led me to my first professional role. Initially, I was set to complete my nuclear Master\u2019s thesis at MIT in Boston, United States. I still remember the topic clearly: my mission was to develop a model to predict the change in the wetting angle of zirconium alloy fuel cladding due to neutron and gamma radiation, and how this affects the critical heat flux threshold at which a dangerous vapor layer forms, leading to a subsequent temperature increase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2020, Macron announced on television that the country would go into lockdown. That same night, I drove back to Spain to avoid the risk of being literally stranded with the wild boars of Cadarache. I still miss them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Due to the pandemic, I was unable to travel to the United States, and the MIT opportunity fell through. I then looked for an alternative internship to complete my degree. In September 2020, I moved to Barcelona and started as a nuclear engineering intern at IDOM, working on the project mentioned above, under Pedro D\u00edaz, who is now at Westinghouse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At IDOM, I closed my academic phase and began my professional career when I was hired after my internship. I first worked on vacuum systems projects performing RAMI analysis, then became coordinator of the CAD team, and later moved into qualification activities. After that, I joined Jorge Fradera\u2019s team (now at newcleo), where I discovered the fascinating world of fusion start-ups and neutron physics. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After almost three years, the timing aligned and I received a LinkedIn job offer to become a Fusion Engineer at Kyoto Fusioneering. I accepted and moved to the United Kingdom with my newly formed family.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How long have you been in your current role, and what are your responsibilities?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Kyoto Fusioneering, I have been in the role for exactly three years. I was recently promoted to Fusion Project Engineer, a title that sounds more refined in English and sits just below Senior level.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My main mission is twofold: on one hand, to contribute to the successful delivery of both external and internal projects within the company; on the other, to support the development of shared knowledge and technical know-how across teams. In line with Kyoto Fusioneering\u2019s vision, my role is ultimately to help accelerate the large-scale deployment of fusion reactors. Some are missing and others are no longer here. But that doesn\u2019t matter.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is motivating work, but also deliberately broad. It requires each of us working in fusion to define and shape our own specific path and responsibilities over time. In my case, my core technical responsibility lies in fusion materials, irradiation, and neutronics. This involves staying up to date with the behaviour of candidate materials for fusion reactor components under irradiation, understanding key manufacturing routes, and performing neutronic simulations under fusion-relevant conditions, then applying this knowledge to identify optimal solutions for each project and define the roadmap required to advance a given technology.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, due to my national connections, I have a strong interest in IFMIF-DONES and actively look for business opportunities with Spanish companies, both for local projects and for UK or international initiatives. I aim to act as a connector between different working cultures and between technical and commercial profiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, I participate in international and local conferences, industry events, and student courses, acting as an ambassador for my company while sharing my perspective on fusion and what is needed to accelerate its development. I particularly enjoy this outreach and communication aspect.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What are the main activities of your current role?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In day-to-day work, a significant part of the role is reading and staying up to date, not only with scientific papers or news, but also with emails and internal messages. I work in a very fast-paced team where the amount of knowledge, connections, and developments being generated requires constant updates. The downside is that this can also create a fair amount of stress and, of course, FOMO, the fear of missing out on an initiative or project. I am actively working on this, while also contributing to building a high-performance but sustainable team culture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a more technical level, it is common to see me writing Python code for OpenMC simulations of components in a given fusion reactor concept. Preparing presentations for clients or conferences. Joining calls with Spanish or European collaborators. Reading papers on new neutron irradiation experiments in tungsten alloys or radiation-resistant steels, or discussing roadmaps for new breeder blanket or shielding concepts. And when I am lucky, and a colleague needs CAD work done, I gladly take that break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within specific projects, I have developed simulation tools for materials and module analysis in IFMIF-DONES using OpenMC, which I presented at the International Conference on Fusion Reactor Materials in Shizuoka, Japan last year. I have also studied and optimised the response of different internal and external shielding configurations, and contributed to the design of breeder blankets, among other similar developments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One particularly relevant experience was a year-long secondment at the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), where I acted as a fabrication responsible. This allowed me to understand the public-sector side of fusion, developing technical requirements and managing requests for proposals to potential suppliers for materials and components needed for the STEP reactor programme. I learned a great deal and still maintain good relationships with the team. This experience has helped me optimise my contributions within the company, always taking into account how public organisations structure and execute projects, as well as other \u201csoft\u201d requirements that are not always written in specifications but become clear through hands-on experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What are the most significant aspects of your work?<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Continuous updating is essential, as is the development and maintenance of an effective professional network. Fusion remains a relatively small field, where it is common to encounter the same people across different projects and events, so sustaining strong and long-lasting professional relationships is key. The effectiveness of my role partly depends on maintaining this network. The same applies internally within the company. Another critical aspect is the international nature of the organisation. The company operates 24\/7 across three main time zones (US\u2013EU\/UK\u2013JP), each with its own working culture. This creates real challenges but is also highly enriching.<\/p>\n<p>On top of that, we work with technologies that are, at best, around TRL 5, but most are at much earlier stages of development. This means decisions are often made under uncertainty, with limited references available, most of them academic. A large part of the work involves formulating hypotheses, managing risk, and making design choices in areas where the final system does not yet exist.<br \/>\nThis requires a long-term perspective and a system-level vision to maximise the probability of success. Whether the fusion sector is currently in a bubble or not remains uncertain, but it is more productive to focus on building rather than questioning that premise.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">How moving abroad impacted in your personal life?<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">What I miss most from my hometown is genuine closeness and spontaneity. I miss the ease of striking up a conversation in a shop or park and almost instantly feeling like you\u2019ve made a connection. Here, that kind of interaction with locals is rare, and it tends to happen mainly with other expatriates. The UK has plenty of charitable organisations, but that is not what I mean. I refer more to the everyday culture: people here are raised with a strong sense of independence and self-sufficiency, which can translate into a certain level of social distance and, at times, loneliness in adult life. There is often a reluctance to intervene or \u201cbother\u201d others. As a simple example, my partner has had situations where, pushing a pram into a closed shop, she had to actively signal for someone to hold the door open, whereas in Spain it would be immediately done without thinking. There is also a noticeable difference in public life. In Spain, streets tend to stay active well into the evening, whereas here people generally go indoors as soon as it gets dark. Social life can feel more constrained, and making spontaneous plans is more difficult.<\/p>\n<p>On the positive side, one of the biggest advantages of living here is being somewhat removed from the political polarisation and cultural tension that exists in Spain. Those dynamics are still present in the UK, but as an immigrant I find myself disengaged from them, which makes daily life feel calmer and more focused.<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\">What do you miss the most from Spain?<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What I miss most from my hometown is genuine closeness and spontaneity. Those dynamics are still present in the UK, but as an immigrant I find myself disengaged from them, which makes daily life feel calmer and more focused.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><b>Do you encourage both younger and older professionals to broaden their career horizons beyond our borders?<\/b><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, for two main reasons. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, for their own personal development in this world. The challenges of living in another country, when properly managed, are always an investment in future skills as an independent individual and as a member of society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Second, because the Spanish industry and labour system urgently need an update and a greater normalisation of professional standards and business culture. It is essential to bring back expatriates with fresh ideas and examples from other countries. In my view, companies in Spain operate under very demanding regulatory and fiscal conditions, which often translate into higher pressure and more defensive attitudes, both towards employees and between organisations. It is not uncommon that no fusion start-up has successfully emerged in Spain, even after the experience of CIEMAT, the University of Seville, or now IFMIF-DONES.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than ever, the world is open for young Spanish professionals. We have a very strong reputation, and it is important to take advantage of it. The opportunities are there. Keep your LinkedIn updated and apply directly to the companies, organisations, or laboratories you are interested in until you get in. Wherever I can, I am committed to helping fellow Spaniards from abroad and offering readers guidance and support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sacrifice of living outside your home country is limited, mainly consisting of moments of loneliness and occasional disconnection from those back in Spain. But as long as you stay properly connected and maintain a strong support network that provides emotional stability, you can go anywhere.
