The <strong>Spanish Nuclear Regulatory Authority (CSN)<\/strong> has issued its report and delivered a favorable assessment regarding the <strong>continued operation of the Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant through 2030<\/strong>. This comes as no surprise to nuclear professionals, who are involved in the plant\u2019s day-to-day operations and are familiar with the condition of the facility, its operating procedures, and its overall operational capabilities. In fact, it should come as no surprise for the entire Spanish nuclear fleet, extending well beyond the currently scheduled shutdown dates. Spain\u2019s seven operating reactors are fully capable\u2014both from a technical standpoint and in terms of human resources\u2014of continuing to provide reliable baseload generation and contribute to the security of electricity supply, should the political and economic context evolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the CSN\u2019s confirmation that Almaraz is capable of continuing operations, the publication of this <strong>favorable assessment<\/strong> has prompted other socio-political stakeholders to voice their support and once again call for Spain to reconsider its position on the future of its nuclear fleet. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Business organizations such as Foment del Treball in Catalonia, as well as local and regional political representatives, including those from the Valencian Community, have seized upon this technical assessment endorsing the continued operation of Almaraz to<strong> renew their calls for a reassessment of Spain\u2019s energy policy<\/strong>. They argue that today\u2019s context differs substantially from that of 2019, when the nuclear phase-out timetable was established, and therefore warrants a fresh evaluation of the role of nuclear energy in the country\u2019s energy mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s move beyond the debate of one technology versus another and adopt a pragmatic, long-term approach. Spain should make full use of the assets it already has at its disposal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>The issue is not whether to build new nuclear power plants<\/strong>, but whether it makes sense to shut down facilities that operate safely, continue to perform reliably, and remain capable of providing substantial amounts of electricity. At a time when energy security, competitiveness, and decarbonization have become strategic priorities, the continued operation of existing nuclear plants deserves careful and objective consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let us take Almaraz Nuclear Power Plant as an example\u2014an example of what is being advocated not only by the country&#8217;s nuclear industry and its professionals, but also by a broad cross-section of Spain\u2019s socio-economic and business community. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The plant\u2019s owners have demonstrated, through sustained investment and responsible management, their commitment to operating the facility beyond the currently scheduled closure dates. The local community surrounding the plant has mobilized to make its voice heard and to prevent Almaraz from being shut down next year. Numerous organizations and institutions at the national level have joined this effort, which has also received support from European and international policymakers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the necessary technical endorsement has been provided through the CSN\u2019s favorable assessment. Up to this point, the picture is clear: there is broad alignment among the key stakeholders. Yet one crucial element is still missing\u2014<strong>decisive leadership and a clear, transparent vision, guided by the national interest, to define Spain\u2019s energy future.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a decision that must be taken with a broad perspective and a clear understanding of the bigger picture. Proceeding with the closure of Spain\u2019s nuclear power plants in order to fulfil commitments driven by ideology, while disregarding the facts and realities we face today, is an approach that jeopardizes our future\u2014everyone\u2019s future.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>No surprises.
