Hoy contamos la historia de c\u00f3mo la casualidad llev\u00f3 a R\u00f6ntgen a descubrir la existencia de los rayos X.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><strong><div class=\"su-divider su-divider-style-double\" style=\"margin:15px 0;border-width:3px;border-color:#0b6d31\"><\/div><\/strong><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span class=\"su-dropcap su-dropcap-style-simple\" style=\"font-size:2.5em\">O<\/span><em>tra vez se hab\u00eda hecho de noche. Era un fr\u00edo 8 de noviembre de 1895. Las investigaciones sobre el tubo de Crookes no estaban resultando todo lo satisfactorias que habr\u00eda querido. Wilhem hab\u00eda conseguido llegar a ser director de la c\u00e1tedra de F\u00edsica de Wurzburgo por su perseverancia. Y, por su perseverancia tambi\u00e9n, quer\u00eda desentra\u00f1ar los misterios que se escond\u00edan all\u00ed dentro. Por en\u00e9sima vez en la tarde, conect\u00f3 la bobina de inducci\u00f3n y arranc\u00f3 la bomba de vac\u00edo. Su ruido ensordecedor le provocaba jaqueca, pero ya estaba m\u00e1s que acostumbrado. Fatigado de analizar el halo verdoso que se desprend\u00eda del extremo fluorescente del tubo, desvi\u00f3 su mirada a una mesa cercana. Un momento \u2013 pens\u00f3 \u2013 \u00bfpor qu\u00e9 esas sales est\u00e1n brillando? Las sales fluorescentes, esparcidas en una mesa cercana al tubo, brillaban d\u00e9bilmente. Ese brillo extra\u00f1o debe ser por iluminaci\u00f3n indirecta del tubo -dedujo Wilhem\u2013 tap\u00e1ndolo a continuaci\u00f3n con un papel perfectamente opaco. Las sales continuaban brillando. Prob\u00f3 a acercar una pantalla fluorescente que ten\u00eda en su laboratorio. Brillaba en toda su extensi\u00f3n. Era como si unos misteriosos rayos saliesen del tubo e iluminasen los materiales fluorescentes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u00a1Diantres! \u2013 pens\u00f3 Wilhem \u2013 \u00a1debe haber alg\u00fan error en el experimento! Quiso poner distancia y se llev\u00f3 la pantalla fuera del laboratorio, cerrando la puerta tras de s\u00ed. La pantalla brillaba m\u00e1s d\u00e9bilmente. Pero hab\u00eda algo m\u00e1s. En la pantalla hab\u00eda aparecido una sombra. Una sombra con un cierto aire familiar\u2026 \u00a1El pomo de la puerta! \u2013 grit\u00f3 Wilhem. El pomo de la puerta proyectaba su sombra sobre la pantalla, por tanto, por alg\u00fan motivo, los misteriosos rayos procedentes del tubo no consegu\u00edan atravesar el metal. Wilhem abri\u00f3 la puerta del laboratorio y se dirigi\u00f3 directo hacia el tubo, para contemplarlo una vez m\u00e1s. Un momento \u2013 pens\u00f3 \u2013 si los rayos no son capaces de atravesar el metal, \u00bfqu\u00e9 pasar\u00e1 si\u2026? Wilhem acerc\u00f3 su mano al tubo, coloc\u00f3 la pantalla al otro lado y mir\u00f3. Vio la sombra de sus propios huesos. Meses despu\u00e9s de su descubrimiento, ya se estaban realizando pruebas m\u00e9dicas con rayos X por diversos pa\u00edses, cambiando para siempre la historia de la medicina. R\u00f6ntgen no quiso patentar su descubrimiento para que la humanidad pudiese beneficiarse de ello sin restricciones. La causa que explica esta radiaci\u00f3n electromagn\u00e9tica se denomin\u00f3 \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Radiaci%C3%B3n_de_frenado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radiaci\u00f3n de frenado<\/a>\u201d (<em>bremsstrahlung, <\/em>en alem\u00e1n). Al pasar cerca de un n\u00facleo at\u00f3mico, un electr\u00f3n sufre varios procesos: se desacelera, se desv\u00eda y emite radiaci\u00f3n de frenado. En el tubo de Crookes, los electrones a alta velocidad produc\u00edan radiaci\u00f3n de frenado, pero era necesario tener en la trayectoria de dicha radiaci\u00f3n un material que fuese capaz de excitarse para poder percibirlo.
