Nuclear energy in the context of COP28

SEE FULL VERSION
The climate challenges facing humanity require reducing greenhouse gas emissions through mitigation and adaptation mechanisms.

This has been highlighted again at the COP28 Conference of the Parties held in Dubai in November-December 2023 with the theme “Unite, Act, Deliver”.

For the first time in the 28 editions of the annual global climate summit, nuclear energy has been explicitly included in the conclusions document -named as First Global Stocktake-, therefore it is recognized that it has the same importance as renewable energies in the fight against climate change.

In addition, 24 countries on four continents have committed to tripling installed nuclear capacity between now and 2050.

At Foro Nuclear, we consider that nuclear energy is a key element in reducing emissions as it is a technology with very low carbon emissions in its entire life cycle. Nuclear is an energy source capable of supplying large quantities of emissions-free electricity, being the only technology that has been producing more than 20% of the country’s electrical energy for twelve consecutive years.

Given the climate urgency, we must keep all available low-carbon sources. As is already happening in many other countries around the world, the Spanish electrical system needs the continuity of the operation of the nuclear fleet to meet environmental goals, also representing an essential pillar in guaranteeing security of supply and price containment in the electricity market. Therefore, the calendar for cessation of activity of Spanish nuclear power plants should be reconsidered to operate them beyond the currently established deadlines.
