The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant faces a critical challenge: managing over 1,370,000 tons of ALPS-treated water that still contains tritium.
In response to the international call by TEPCO and the Japanese government, a Spanish consortium formed by ENSA, ENWESA, NATURGY Nuclear, SEYS, and NUCLEANTECH developed an innovative solution based on selective tritium adsorption using chemically modified cellulose (NTC-H3®).
The project demonstrated high capture efficiency in laboratory tests, achieving a decontamination factor (DF) ≥ 1,000 and a waste volume reduction exceeding 1/1,000, complying with international regulatory standards.
This technology is not only suitable for Fukushima but also applicable to other nuclear facilities such as PWRs, CANDU reactors, and fusion projects. The solution is safe, scalable, and environmentally sustainable for tritium management.
