Generative AI. Transforming report management in the Nuclear Industry

The nuclear industry has always relied on knowledge management and technical documentation to operate safely and efficiently. However, finding information in thousands of technical documents takes a lot of time, limiting deep analysis which adds real value. In this context, generative artificial intelligence (GAI) emerges as a transformative tool for managing and using information in the nuclear industry..

This article introduces an innovative application based on GAI, developed for the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant. It consists of two main modules: NAKA (Nuclear Advanced Knowledge Assistant) and ONEIA (Efficient Nuclear Operation AI). These modules are designed to assist in the areas of Life Management and Operation, respectively, and represent a paradigm shift in knowledge management.

The development of this application began in March 2024 and has been in production since February 2025. During this time, the architecture has been deployed on AWS (Amazon Web Service), cybersecurity tests, load and data processing and the Fine Tune required for the correct performance of the application.

The NAKA module is designed for the Life Management area, essential in extending the life of a nuclear power plant. This module incorporates more than 3740 documents and transforms information search into an almost instantaneous process, allowing professionals to focus on information analysis. On the other hand, the ONEIA module is aimed at the efficient operation of the nuclear power plant, managing more than 3500 documents and facilitating complex queries in minutes.

Information security is a priority at Iberdrola, so NAKA and ONEIA have undergone rigorous cybersecurity tests to ensure protection against unauthorized access and other cyber risks. The implementation of NAKA and ONEIA has shown significant advantages such as process efficiency, reduction of human error, assistance in decision-making, and identification of new use cases.

In conclusion, generative artificial intelligence is transforming knowledge management in the nuclear industry, optimizing information search and analysis processes, and allowing professionals to spend more time on high-value tasks. The experience at the Cofrentes Nuclear Power Plant shows that this technology is essential for the future of the nuclear industry, contributing to safer, more efficient, and sustainable operation of nuclear power plants worldwide.
